The Zoo, Zoo, Zoo!

When my sister was little she LOVED Raffi. LOVED him! If 4-year-olds plastered their walls with posters, he would have been hung next to Barney and Macaulay Culkin. (For those of you unfamiliar with Raffi, picture the Elvis of children’s music…)

“Going to the Zoo” was by far her favorite song and my poor dad had to endure endless rounds of us singing this audio wonder at the top of our lungs in the small confines of the car.
Mommy’s taking us to the zoo tomorrow, zoo tomorrow, zoo tomorrow!
Mommy’s taking us to the zoo tomorrow!
We can stay all day!
We’re going to the zoo, zoo, zoo!
How about you, you, you?
You can come too, too, too!
We’re going to the zoo, zoo, zoo!
Like most classics, “Going to the Zoo” is ageless so, of course, I downloaded Raffi’s greatest hits for Anna to jam to in her room. And, whaddaya know, “Going to the Zoo” is turning out to be a favorite around our house. Many a time I have heard Jason humming the lyrics to himself (and, sometimes to Anna).

Anyways, this long explanation leads to last Sunday and Anna’s first trip to the zoo, zoo, zoo! As you can imagine, there was much song singing leading up to the big event…

Anna and I met our friends Laurie and Emerson for a leisurely stroll and peek at the exotic offerings of the Atlanta Zoo. The day was beautiful and the animals were frolicking in the fall temperatures. Anna especially enjoyed the flamingos, meerkats, gorillas and pandas. Laurie and I laughed about how the zoo can challenge parents when it comes to animal sounds. I mean, what sound does a giraffe make, anyways?

The first zoo trip definitely warranted a souvenir. In the gift shop Anna selected a small giraffe who we named Gordo. When we arrived home, Gordo was out-of-sight, having been buried under a mound of diaper bag essentials. Jason met us in the garage to extract Anna from her car seat and exclaimed, “What, mom didn’t get you a souvenir – not even a giraffe?!?” To his surprise, we pulled out Gordo – he must be psychic!

We’re already looking forward to our next trip to the zoo, zoo, zoo.
You can come too, too, too!
We’re going to the zoo, zoo, zoo!

A San Francisco Treat!

Call us crazy, but we made a cross country trip with a nine-month-old this past weekend.

We visited San Francisco to attend the wedding of my friend Sarah. She and I used to work together in Boston and we were thrilled to celebrate with her and her new husband Mike. Here’s a picture of the happy couple during their first dance.

While there we took in the sights of the City by the Bay, strolling along Fisherman’s Wharf, eating crab, and braving the crazy steep hills.

Luckily Miss Anna is a very flexible, agreeable gal. She let us schlep her throughout the city with nary a peep. The time change did cause a few tremors in her sleep routine, but we’ll get back to normal soon (I hope!). (Click on the pictures to see bigger versions)

Sightseeing is tiring!

And, to Jason’s delight, we took a day trip to Napa Valley, (which is probably his favorite place in the world). The weather was perfect and it is nearly harvest time so we were able to get some beautiful pictures of the red wine grapes. Anna was a big hit at each winery, waving to patrons, nibbling on crackers and dipping her toes in fountains. She even ate dinner in a winery (see picture)!

Needless to say we had a wonderful weekend – but it feels great to be home, too!

Scrub-a-Dub-Dub, Anna in the Tub...

Not much to say about these pictures – just that Anna LOVES taking a bath. She takes one every night before bed and loves to float, splash and kick with her toys.

The ritual starts with Anna watching the tub fill up, which gets her knees bouncing and the gleeful shouts started. Then she jumps in the tub and plays.

Her favorite toys are rubber duckie (whom we serenade every night with Ernie’s song…although I make up verses because I only know the first one…), pink kitty, and whale. She also has two bath books which get nibbled as much as her regular books. And she loves to stand up. She still doesn’t realize that the tub is slippery.

Here’s our bathing beauty…

Anna’s Tricks

I've always heard that babies mimic everything – wow, is that true! Almost daily I’ll see Anna doing something new and usually I can connect it to something Jason and I do regularly.

For example, on the airplane flying back from Boston last week I was chewing gum and she would watch intently and squeal when I would blow a bubble. The next day I saw her chomping her jaws up and down and occasionally puckering her lips and sticking her tongue through them. What do you know, she was chewing gum and blowing bubbles! So now if you say, “Anna, chew your gum,” she chomps her jaws up and down. It’s really cute!

She does several tricks –
* High fives
* Waves hello and good bye
* Dances
* Clinks her cup with yours when you say cheers

And, the trick that makes us most proud…she will show you where her feet are!

We’re also working on “Touchdown!”, “I don’t know” (shoulder shrug), and identifying her hands and nose.

I guess this is when we really have to start watching what we do and say – I’m sure there are some “tricks” we do that wouldn’t be so cute when performed by a nine month old…

I captured several of these feats in the video below. Enjoy!

Are You Ready For Some Football???

Anna sure is, and anyone who has met Jason for say, 10 seconds, knows he LOVES football. We have a “party” every Sunday during football season (I say “party” because it’s only us, no guests, but terming it that makes us feel better about scarfing down mounds of junk food…).

Yesterday Jason and Anna suited up for the kickoff to the season, cheering on the beloved Patriots. We were excited to have Anna don her #12 Tom Brady jersey, but fear it needs to be retired after one game. Yes, sadly, Tom was injured and it looks like he’ll be out for most, if not all, of the season.

So, it was a bittersweet football party. The Patriots won, but the season outlook is bleak. But, we’re glass-is-half-full people, so, GO, Matt Cassel, GO! Maybe he can pull off a Brady-esque season 1 performance…

Bergstrom Beach Bums, Part 2

Good news! We were able to snag a wireless signal at the beach! I thought I would share some pictures from our visit so far. We’re having a very fun time…of course like all vacations, it’s going too fast!
