Fantasy Island

One night in January Jason and I were talking and realized we had not been on a vacation alone for more than two nights in five years (hmm, what could have caused that, I wonder?).  Between work and kids and a cat and responsibilities and blah blah blah, we decided it was high time to treat ourselves to a "grown up" vacation.  Almost on a whim (we did make sure Gramma could watch the kids), we booked a trip, just the two of us, for a full week.  Fantasy!

Fast forward to April and in a bit of disbelief we actually found ourselves headed to the airport, boarding a plane and arriving in Grand Cayman.  The week was reminiscent of a verse out from Kokomo...tropical drinks melting in our hand, sun, sand, delicious food, sleeping in - the place to go to get away from it all.

We can't wait for the next trip - hopefully it won't take another five years!

Parenting in 2013

Don't really need a post for this pic.  Needless to say, my kids can work a phone.  But they insist on being within touching distance (or sitting on top of me) even while absorbed in a game or video.  As long as they don't spill my wine! :)

Rainbow cake

For a few weeks Anna was on a mission to bake a cake.  Every few days she would ask if we could make one.  I finally acquiesced and decided that if we were to make a cake, we would go big.  Enter the rainbow cake.  I had seen a picture online of a multi-layer cake with colors swirled throughout and decided that we would tackle it.  Anna settled on five different batter colors and we swirled them together.  I think the end result was pretty neat, a tad more "tie dye" than "rainbow", but everyone who saw the cake was amazed nonetheless.  James, especially was a big fan, as the video below shows.  He sings a bar of Happy Birthday to You that will make you chuckle.

Bundled up at Burke

We decided to bundle up and head to Vermont to see Grammy and Fafa and celebrate James turning two.  Jason was eager to ski, Anna was excited to play with Grammy, James was looking forward to "go on airplane!" and I was just happy to get away.  

Unfortunately a stomach bug knocked Anna down for the count most of the trip, but she did rally each morning and head out skiing (the resiliency of youth).  Before the trip we talked to Anna about going to ski school for lessons.  She freaked out at the prospect and when I dug a little deeper, she told me she didn't know how she would do her school work while skiing.  Nothing we could say would convince her it was only a ski lesson.

James tried skiing (not successfully), loved the snow, hated sledding, and made himself at home at the mid-Burke lodge each afternoon when we met Jason and Fafa.

Of course the time went too fast, but it was well worth the trip.  Next year we will go for longer!

James.  Jamesers.  Jamesy.  Jimmy.  Yimmy.  Whatever you call him, he's two years old now (although he will tell you he's 6!).  Happy birthday sweet, silly, funny boy.  We love you!  (And fingers crossed the "terrible" part of this year never appears).

My Little Valentines

It may be a "Hallmark holiday" but I love Valentine's Day.  I don't see it as a day of romance, but rather a day to give your family and friends an extra hug and remind yourself that YOU love THEM.

Growing up I have very fond memories of Valentine's Day, which always started with a little stuffed animal or gift and candy from my parents.  Then, decorating a shoebox with construction paper hearts in anticipation of exchanging cheap character Valentine's later in the day with classmates.  Eating conversation hearts and chocolate.  Telling your friends and family you love them?  I mean, what's not to love?!?

So, forgive me if I shower on the hearts and candy a little thick with Anna and James, but who could ask for cuter Valentines?

Drama Queen!

Anna continues to proclaim that she is going to be a "singing star".  Well, what star can do without a little drama?  Drama club, that is.

Anna's always been a creative gal, but tends a bit on the shy side, so I thought drama might help her be comfortable in front of audiences (singing star or not), and give her a new creative outlet to express herself.

After each 6 week session the drama class puts on a play to show off their skills.  At the end of the second session the class put on "The Talking Pot", and when I arrived to watch, I learned Anna was playing the title character (she's good at keeping secrets).

I'm a little biased but I think she made the show :).
